Your Wallet and White Jeans

One thing that I love is white jeans. LOVE them. I got a pair of white Rock Revivals last spring (before I knew I was pregnant) and I only got to wear them a few times before they were wayyy to uncomfortable. :( (Rocks have a super small, no stretch, waistband... So they did NOT work with my prego body) Buying a pair of $158 white jeans wasn't exactly the smart choice, even with an employee discount at Buckle. Needless to say, I was super disappointed I was going to have to wait 9 months to wear them.

Who was I kidding?! 9 months? Ya, try never. They still don't fit! And after being depressed about the one pair of pants I really really wanted to fit in again being the only pair that will probably never fit again.... I decided to do some research. I tried on about a thousand pairs of white jeans. And I found a miracle. (is this story dramatic enough yet?)
Old Navy! Old Navy? Yes, Old Navy. The Diva Skinny fit comes in pretty much every color and honestly... they fit better, feel better, and look better than the $158 Rock Revivals. And they are only $30 full price. They are $15 right now. I was shocked at how great these were, and even though I know a lot of people love Rocks. . . in my lifestyle these jeans were much better. They have a great stretch to them, something that the Rocks DID NOT have in the least bit, they have a higher rise which is so much safer when you are bending down and picking up a baby all day, they are thick enough so they aren't see through, and they are completely plain on the pocket which makes them a lot easier to wear with different outfits. (lets face it, Rocks are a little much sometimes.) There are also a bunch of other fits that come in white at Old Navy, so if the Diva isn't for you try on a Rockstar or a Sweetheart fit! They have 5 different fits and each comes in a huge variety of washes and lengths as well as leg openings!

So the moral of the story is, the best jeans for you aren't always the most expensive. So make sure you check around before you buy!

(p.s. Old navy also has shorts in that perfect length for modesty conscious folk!)

Here are some ways I've worn them, all budget friendly outfits:

For our family pictures I wore an entirely Old Navy outfit, the whole thing cost under $50!
Jeans: Old Navy, Top: Old Navy, TShirt: Old Navy
You can see the rest of our family pics here!

Jeans: Old Navy, Undershirt: Down East, Shoes: Target,
Top: Kohls, Necklace: Buckle (similar), Watch: Fossil

Now does anyone want to buy a pair of white Rock Revivals from me???? haha jk, but seriously....

Stop and Smell the... Spit-up?

I don't know about all you other moms out there, but it seems like the second you find out you are going to be a parent and for years and years to come, one of the most focused on subjects is "what do I need"? What do I need to bathe this baby, what do I need to travel, what do I need to feed them, what do I need????? It seems like everyone has that "must have" product for every situation.

It's fun to get ready for your little one by registering and making lists and picking out those important items. But, sometimes I think we get too focused on all the stuff and we forget what is most important.
Now, I'm not saying that researching products and making lists of must haves is bad. Heck, I do a post about my fav baby products every month! But every once and awhile I think it's good to forget all the stuff.
This weekend I really got thinking about what it is that Bennett really needs most, and you know what? None of the things I came up with came from Target or Babies R Us. Everything that I thought of was not available in any store.

3 things stuck out to me.

The first thing was time. A baby need time, a child needs time, a teenager needs time. Heck, my husband needs time! What greater gift can we give our child than spending time with him or her? I know its tempting to turn on a cute tv show and just relax while baby is focused on the colors and sounds (and want to do it wayyyyyyy more than I will admit) but I think taking that time to read Bennett a book, or play peek a boo, or even just sit together is much more beneficial for him and me. We all need a break, dont get me wrong, and when you do take one!! But, I'm going to make a goal to try and make an effort to spend a good amount of quality time with Bennett every day, that isn't feeding or bathing or changing. Just time to be together.

The second thing is being happy! This may contradict the first one, but I truly believe moms need both of these things. If mom isn't happy, the kids can tell. I have spent way too much time the first 6 months of Bennett's life being frustrated with my fitness level. It is ridiculous to me how often these last 6 months I've felt depressed because I felt too guilty to go to the gym or take time to work out. I felt like going to the gym was taking time from Bennett, but I would spend an hour freaking out over not being able to fit in the outfit I wanted to wear that day. Time I could have used just doing a quick workout! If you aren't happy, you can't take care of your baby. Period. Now I know we can't be happy all the time, but if you are unhappy about something and it is eating you up.... maybe a bad relationship, or a grudge, or a bad body image.... try and fix it! I know its not easy, and I know moms are busy but just try and get rid of something that is taking any amount of happiness away from you. Take time for yourself so you are able to give time to your kids, and I promise you will feel like a better mom.

And the third thing that a baby needs is LOVE! Easy as that. Love your baby, love his screaming, love his smiles, love his spit up stained clothes. (lets be honest, I think more of my clothes are spit up stained than his. Why is that? How does it always miss the kid and hit me?!) Now I know all those things are frustrating, heck this morning I got peed on. Not exactly my idea of a loving experience. But before I got frustrated I laughed, I consciously decided to laugh and remember that he will never be this age again, he will never be 6 months and 4 days old EVER again. Seek out other moms and vent and get support, realize that it is OK to be frustrated or burned out or tired, and don't feel guilty. Don't listen to people who say that you aren't a good mom if you don't enjoy having baby food thrown at your face. But decide to laugh, decide to love, and decide to be happy.

Too many people are under the impression that happiness just happens, that love just happens, that being a good mom just happens. NO, it is hard work. But you can do it. Even if you don't feel like you can on those tough days. Look at your sweet kids and just love them. They don't need every toddler activity you see on Pinterest to be happy and well adjusted, they just need you. Those things are fun but they aren't the most important. Do what you can, and realize that we are all different, we are all of worth, and we are all worthy of love from others and especially from ourselves.

Thanks for following along as I learn about being a mom, I am learning way more about myself than I thought I would. I am loving this journey, even if it isn't always the picture perfect experience we all imagine... it is perfect for me. And I am learning to find joy in every messy diaper. (Learning is the key word)

Black Bean Enchiladas
My husband and I decided a while ago that we were going to try to cut back on meat which proved to be hard for us. We were literally eating meat for dinner every night of the week. I didn’t expect too much out of this recipe when I found it but decided to try it because it used beans instead of meat. Oh. My. Heck. These were so yummy, not to mention easy! These will defiantly be a staple in our home.

Black Bean Enchiladas (Click for Printable Version)
Prep time:20 min  Cook time:25 min  Total time:45 min   Serves:2

1 Tablespoon Vegetable Oil
¼ Cup Chopped Onion
½ Teaspoon Ground Cumin
½ Cup Frozen Corn
1/3 Cup Your Favorite Salsa
½ Can Black Beans, Drained
1 Cup Monterey Jack Cheese
6 Corn Tortillas (6 inch)
½ Can Enchilada Sauce
Chopped Olives, Shredded Lettuce, and any other garnish desired

Preheat oven to 350. Spray a baking dish with cooking spray.
In a skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and cumin, cook and stir until onion is tender.
Stir in corn, salsa, beans and ½ cup cheese. Remove from heat.
Stack tortillas on a microwavable plate and cover with a wet paper towel, microwave for 30 seconds to soften. Spoon bean mixture in center of tortilla and roll tightly, placing seam side down in backing dish. Repeat with remaining tortillas.
Pour enchilada sauce over enchiladas and sprinkle with remaining cheese.
Back 25-30 minutes or until cheese is melted and sauce is bubbly around edges. Garnish with remaining ingredients.

5 Month Baby Favorites

Bennett is almost to 6 months old! I cannot believe it! It seems like yesterday I had this little squish in my hospital bed with me.

And now he is a big boy :( even though he is still just as cute :)

Here are some of my 5 month favorites! Remember the links are underneath the picture.

1. Munchkin Bath Buddies : Bennett loves playing with these in the bath, and I love them because they are stiff enough that he can't squirt himself in the face and they are the perfect size for his little hands.
2. Fisher Price Snugamonkey Sleepytime Toy: This cute monkey glows and plays soft music while baby goes to sleep. I love this because it isn't creepy like those worm things and it can be set to play one song or continual for 20 minutes.
3. Munchkin Soft Tip Spoons: These are great for feeding because they are deeper than Gerber spoons, and they have a thick handle so Baby can hold them easily.
4. Bumbo Play Tray: Perfect addition to your Bumbo, and super convenient for feeding or even putting some toys on for baby to play with when you want to keep him contained. ha
5. Baby Bjorn Carrier: This carrier is perfect for us. We have a ring sling that I love around the house, but this carrier is great for out and about. Ben will actually wear it because it doesn't look girly, and it is super comfortable for the wearer and the baby.
